Gyms, no. Surely, we can do better than that. And we can! But let’s start with the more obvious stuff. You can stay in a hotel or hostel with a gym and pool, or even be luxurious with a sauna or steam room, but why not get outisde of your living quarters and see what the world has to offer?
Mud wrestling & Mud Fights
On my to-do list, whatever I seen videos of this, it always looks like an amazing amount of fun. Of course, you have to be willing to get dirty, so how is anything ever find if you aren’t willing to dive right in? You don’t need excellent technique or to be a professional to enjoy such a cathartic and freeing experience. You may even find yourself when you finally stop worrying about just how muddy you are.
And for those of you who are not so into body contact with other people, there are mud fights. Definitely a sure way to work out those arms and legs while you destroy your opponent or help your team to victory!
Something else that I’ve been thoroughly interested in over the past couple of years. This has to do with benefits of helping you to be submerged in whichever culture the martial arts style is being taught from. You’ll learn about the etiquette of the art form, possibly pick up some new words, do some new moves, and find some muscles that cannot be trained by going to a gym.
Drumming (Drum Circle or Drum Class)
This one might have been very unexpected, but for anyone who’s ever played a drum then you know how intense it can be. And if you happen to be traveling to Japan, you could even try out the giant drums they are known for. That, I assure you, is a full-body experience. Check out the video below to see!
Rent a bike
There are some places that offer daily, weekly, and even monthly bike rentals. Viking is one of my favorite activities to do especially in a new city because it gives you the opportunity to check out the neighborhood much more quickly than you could on foot. When you are on a bike, you get of you of your new neighborhood or the area that you are visiting that you cannot get from in the inside of a car or on a train.
Roller skating isn’t dead! See those sites on wheels. A very horrible roller skater myself, but, I have seen meeting your person roller skating in New York City’s Central Park and along the streets of Manhattan. Of course, this is not a cobblestone or unpaved Road friendly activity, so you can’t just do it anywhere.
Dance clubs or classes
Dancing is one of my favorite activities to do when I visit any place. I spent quite a few hours clubbing while I was in Paris and Barcelona, and it is by far, in my opinion, one of the best ways to be immersed in the culture while burning calories. You can try a new drinks, meet new people, make friends, new dance moves and hear music all in one night.
Swimming & Cliff Diving
I know I said to get away from your hotel, Air BnB, or hostel and I meant it! This doesn’t mean you have to go to the beach, but why would you resist going to a fabulous beach? You can go scuba diving or jump off a high cliff into a body of water like Pocahontas. I’m not telling you to do this, but I am saying that it’s always been on my to-do list and it does look like a lot of fun. Plus, there are plenty of videos of other people doing it so it has to be relatively safe, right?
